Being Both a Professional Educator and a Community Leader
As educators, we sometimes see how we can exhibit leadership roles on campus, but only rarely do we step out to contribute our talents as part of the community. This doesn't mean that one has to run for office; teachers can can make a difference for those near and far in a variety of ways, and those efforts can be personally and professionally rewarding. We'll look at several approaches to getting involved in your community, and at the same time how doing so can help students see their possibilities for making a difference.

Going from Visible to Present & Engaged as a School Leader
One of the challenges I have encountered as an educational leader is transitioning from being a visible leader to a present and engaged one. A leader who not only walks into classrooms but spends time in classrooms and engages in meaningful conversations with students, teachers and families to ensure that there is continuity across all grades and that the learning is meaningful and transparent.

Closing Session & Keynote
All conference attendees are invited to a special General Session Saturday afternoon. The session will begin with a special presentation by The Walt Disney Family Museum and will conclude with the keynote address, presented by Rachel Gardner. Get there early, as space is limited.

CUE 2016 Fall Conference Closing Session & Keynote Description:

Rachel Gardner

Rachel Gardner is a freshman at Stanford University where she studies computer science and entrepreneurship as she prepares for a career launched by her unique high-school experience as the first CEO of Chap Research. Started at Westlake High School in Austin, TX, this extracurricular program inspires innovation through project-based learning. Rachel has been developing the program since age 15, when she was the team lead and programmer for the original project, a wireless robotics controller called the Chap Remote. Rachel is lead inventor on US Patent #9043031 for the ChapR, and led the manufacture, marketing and shipment of over 150 units to FIRST Robotics teams around the world. Rachel then assigned her patent rights to Westlake High School, and created Chap Research to give other students the same opportunities. Since its inception, the program has completed a total of 13 projects and published 3 research papers. Rachel now works to spread the model of Chap Research, speaking at events such as SXSWedu and TCEA.

Innovation Education: From Whiteboard to Reality

In an education system often focused on rubrics and step-by-step instructions, students aren’t learning the creative problem solving skills they need to excel. Meanwhile, businesses are demanding the skills to innovate and design from scratch. We need to bridge that gap between industry expectations and classroom experiences.

Chap Research is an innovation program within Westlake High School in Austin, Texas that endeavors to teach the skills needed in industry. This session will be exploring a student perspective through the experiences of the student CEO and founder of the program. Only two years old, the program has already had a significant impact on its students, and it strives to serve as an example for other schools.

The Walt Disney Family Museum

Recognized nationally for its integration of STEAM curriculum—The Walt Disney Family Museum will spotlight its most recent technology-based learning developments. Representing the museum’s education department, Katherine Coogan and Antonia Dapena-Tretter explore the potential for simple technological tools in the classroom to increase problem-solving skills for students of all ages.

With special attention paid to the museum’s signature Multiplane Camera Classroom Kit, Kate and Antonia demonstrate how Walt Disney’s 1937 innovation in animation introduced depth of field into movies such as Snow White (1937) and Pinocchio (1940). During this participatory keynote, select volunteers from the audience bring characters and backgrounds to life when invited on stage to try stop-motion animation first hand.

*There is an overflow room for the keynote. The overflow room is in the Cafeteria in Building B.

You can watch this keynote streaming live via cue.org/live
